Mary's interest in pastel painting began during her years at Whitworth College in: Spokane, WA where she majored in art an elementary education. Though she has worked in watercolor and oil as well as calligraphy, her interest has consistently turned primarily to pastel because of the medium's rich potential for glowing, vibrant color and the harmony achieved in bringing together lights and shadows. She also likes the fact that pastel allows her to build up layers of medium so that under colors can "peek" through the top layers. She enjoys painting landscapes, portraits and still lifes using subject matter that is meant to evoke a sense of intimacy, warmth and community.
She currently is a member of the Northwest Pastel Society and the Peninsula Arts Association as well as the Olympia Art League. Her work has been displayed and sold in various galleries and shows throughout the states of Washington and Oregon.
